April 5 – LivingRoom Lesson for KIDS

Dear FPC Families,

This Sunday, I will miss getting to see our children waving those Palm branches and shouting Hosanna! I will miss their sweet voices and sweet faces. But I am praying for all of you, and I know that we are doing what is best to keep everyone safe and healthy. During this time of celebration as we are drawing so close to Easter, I hope that your family will find some time in the next few days to relax, get comfy, and discuss this week’s “LivingRoom Lesson.” If you have thoughts or questions to share, please post those in the comments section below!

Deep Blue Kids Episode 6:

Step 1: Read the Scripture

Before watching the video linked below, please read this scripture passage aloud with your family.

Matthew 21:1-11  (NRSV)

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately. This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,

“Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Step 3: Discussion

  1. How do you think the people of Jerusalem felt when they were watching Jesus ride through the streets?
  2. “Hosanna” means to praise Jesus. What are ways you can praise Jesus every day?
  3. Because we can’t be together in church this Palm Sunday, talk with your children about our Palm Sunday traditions. Remind them that if we were in church, they would be waving palm branches just like the kids in the video! (see step 4)

Step 4: Craft and Activity Time

For this week’s activity, you can act out Palm Sunday with your family! You’re going to need some palm branches, so here’s a quick little tutorial for making them out of your family’s handprints. Use everyone’s handprints to make the palm branches more special.

(If you don’t have green paper, you can use white paper and color green. If you don’t have popsicle sticks, try using a plastic knife or even a drinking straw! Get creative and make it fun.)

*Email pictures of your family with your branches to kanthony@fayettepcusa.org and I’ll post them on our FPC Facebook page!

**Outreach Activity Challenge**

As you probably know, many people who live in nursing homes or assisted living facilities are not allowed to have any visitors at this time. This week, I challenge our FPC families to send cards/letters to members of our FPC congregation in local care facilities! The following members would love to hear from you and you can find their addresses in the PFC directory – if you need an electronic copy emailed to you, please write me at kanthony@fayettepcusa.org and I’ll be happy to send you one!

Please write to:

Ellen Rodriguez
Bill Moses
Linda McNeill
Jack Mahaffey

I hope we will be together again soon. ?

 Love and Blessings!
Miss Karen
